چکیده

A single item is sold to two bidders by way of a sealed bid second price auction in which bids are restricted to a set of discrete values. Restricting attention to symmetric pure strategy behavior on the part of bidders, a unique equilibrium exists. When following these equilibrium strategies bidders may bid strictly above or below their valuation, implying that the item may be awarded to a bidder other than the high valuation bidder. In an auction with two acceptable bids, the expected revenue of the seller may be maximized by a high bid level not equal to the highest possible bidder valuation and may exceed the expected revenue from a traditional second price auction with continuous bidding. With three acceptable bids, a revenue maximizing seller may choose unevenly spaced bids. With an arbitrary number of evenly spaced bids, as the distance between bids is reduced, the expected revenue of the seller and the probability of ex post inefficiency both may increase or decrease.

Bidder Behavior in Sealed Bid Auctions Where the Number of Bidders is Unknown

This paper analyzes individual bidding data from a series of sealed-bid auctions in which bidders do not known how many bidders they are bidding against. Unlike previous studies of sealed bid second price auctions with known number of bidders, we find a surprising amount of coincidence with theory. We observe systematic deviations from risk neutral bidding in first price auctions and show that ...

Accounting for Cognitive Costs in On - lineAuction

Many auction mechanisms, including rst and second price ascending and sealed bid auctions, have been proposed and analyzed in the economics literature. We compare the usefulness of diierent mechanisms for on-line auctions, focusing on the cognitive costs placed on users (e.g. the cost of determining the value of a good), the possibilities for agent mediation, and the trust properties of the auc...

Zero Intelligence Plus and Gjerstad-Dickhaut Agents for Sealed Bid Auctions

The increasing prevalence of auctions as a method of conducting a variety of transactions has promoted interest in modelling bidding behaviours with simulated agent models. The majority of popular research has focused on double auctions, i.e. auctions with multiple buyers and sellers. In this paper we investigate agent models of sealed bid auctions, i.e. single seller auctions where each buyer ...

Cost and Trust Issues in On-Line Auctions

Many auction mechanisms, including rst and second-price ascending and sealed-bid auctions, have been proposed and analyzed in the economics literature. We compare the usefulness of di erent mechanisms for on-line auctions, focusing on the di erent costs of determining reservation prices, determining bids and communicating bids, and on whether the auctioneer is trusted. Di erent auction formats ...

Strategic Jump Bidding in English Auctions

This paper solves for equilibria of sequential bid (or English) auctions with affiliated values when jump bidding strategies may be employed to intimidate one’s opponents. In these equilibria, jump bids serve as correlating devices which select asymmetric bidding functions to be played subsequently. Each possibility of jump bidding provides a Pareto improvement for the bidders from the symmetri...

The price of independence in simultaneous auctions

We present a computationally feasible method for predicting joint probability distributions over auction clearing prices, together with a bidding heuristic that exploits these price predictions. We demonstrate experimentally that our heuristic outperforms the state-of-the-art heuristic for bidding in simultaneous, second-price, sealed-bid (SimSPSB) auctions.
